Comp1/ Dr. Sherry

Not only did this simple ten-minute interview with Assistant Professor Dr. Christian Grandzol change the way I viewed my major-to-be, it even ended up offering me some opportunities! As an undeclared freshman, I hope to major in Management which is why I chose Dr. Grandzol; an assistant professor of Management and Marketing here at Bloomsburg. Before this interview, I had a serious interest in the field of Management and after this interview, my choice was solidified. During our meeting, Dr. Grandzol informed me of an upcoming club for students who are interested in Supply Chain Management and/or Marketing. He gave me a copy of the club flyer and meeting times, and soon I will be able to say I am the proud member of a new club! Dr. Grandzol seemed like a very nice guy who had no problem answering any of my questions.
When it came time for me to finally start asking him some questions having to do with writing inside of the field of Management, the first question I asked him was: “What kinds of writing do you do in your field or job?” Dr. Grandzol said that it usually varies; meaning that it completely depends on the job. When he used to be a Human Resources Manager, he would have to write documents such as training guidelines, or even grievance policies for his company. When he needed to be persuasive, he would write strong business cases in hopes that whoever was reading his case would agree to his company’s demands or requests. Since he is now a professor here at Bloomsburg, his answers changed when asked “What kind of writing do you do on an average day?” These days, most of the writing he does is digital. He writes “tons” of E-mail a day which is almost always responding to his students, or writing to certain alumni of the school. When it came to his classroom activities, he barely has to pick up a pen which surprised me very much. He usually conjures up different business cases and scenarios in the form of PowerPoint slides which he then presents to his class. His classes are very discussion-based which I like a lot. This made me start thinking about maybe becoming a teacher of Business/Management someday.
I learned that his main purpose for writing is mainly research. I soon found out that Dr. Grandzol has written multiple research articles over the years, and he said he has developed a passion for it. Other than his research, Dr. Grandzol’s main purpose for writing is his committee work. He is always writing up proposals for new classes and clubs here at Bloomsburg, which I admired very much. He seemed to really love his job and care about his students. When I asked him: “What audiences do you write for?” he immediately said his students. Other than his students, he writes research articles for his piers to read, he writes to the committee, the Administration, and even the alumni. Needless to say, on any given day Dr. Grandzol has his hands full.
Even though it may seem like his job is overwhelming, Dr. Grandzol enjoys what he does. “What do you personally get out of all of this?” I asked him. “Well, there’s nothing like writing a good lesson plan” he said. As I said before, he also has learned to really enjoy writing research articles; which I could actually see myself getting into. Due to the fact that he enjoys writing these research articles, my last question: “Which certain research article do you specifically admire?” was a tough one for him. After some thought, he said that the article he co-wrote about the Winding Creek Pharmaceutical company was his crown jewel, along with his dissertation. After I was finished asking him questions, we ended up talking for an additional fifteen minutes. I learned so much from such a short interview! If I ever make it big in the Business world one day, I can honestly say that Dr. Grandzol was my first big influence
